The 70's were a tumultuous time for the Middle East . The 1973 Oil embargo sparked off a covert CIA war against the Arab/Iranian controlled OPEC. Saudi King Faisal was assassinated in 1975. The Shah of Iran was removed next in 1979 with the US/UK supported Khomeini put in his place. 1979 is the year, that Saddam was put into power, that the Camp David Accords were signed and the beginning of the Afghan-War. The US covertly armed the Islamic/Afghan rebels with Soviet weapons from Egypt. Sadat probably supplied the weapons to the USA as part of the Camp David Accord's. In two years Sadat to would be dead assassinated by Islamic Fundamentalists. Meanwhile the Iran/Iraq War had begun putting two of the worlds richest oil producing nations in no position to participate in a oil embargo because they needed the money to buy arms. Islamic Terrorism has been very good for Uncle Sam to say the least. In the 1970's the USA used it to remove the threat it faced from secular regimes in the CENTCOM region world. In 1990-2005 it was used to justify the expense of the Military Industrial Complex in the absence of the Cold War which had ended in 1991.
