I have questions about Hurricane Katrina, maybe a discussion would be good as I would like others opinions.
I am wondering, knowing the ferocity of the hurricane that was about to belt down on the city of New Orleans and the general Louisiana and surrounding counties, how come more was not done to ensure as many people as possible evacuated? How come the decision was made to move thousands of people to the Superdome rather than getting them out of the city altogether?
The New Orleans Superdome is only blocks from a major river.

As early as the 26th the media were reporting about the hurricane and how severe it might be. How come people were not taken out of the city in police and army transport? When it hit Florida and it was obvious the path it was taking.
A lot could have been done to minimise loss of life, how come people spent time boarding up houses when it was predicted the 60 - 80% of houses could be destroyed by the storm?:
Estimates predict that 60% to 80% of the city's houses will be destroyed by wind. With the flood damage, most of the people who live in and around New Orleans could be homeless.

So many questions need to be answered about the preparations for this hurricane and the lack of coordinated effort to get people out of the area in the days leading up to it.
Reading through the various reports from US media they read like movie scripts.
Is this somebody's idea of a convenient catastrophe?
